Kurdistan Diabetes Association (KDA)—History and Establishment

The Kurdistan Diabetes Association (KDA) was officially established in 2004 in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with the mission of improving diabetes care, awareness, and education throughout the region. Founded by a group of dedicated endocrinologists, diabetologists, and public health professionals, the association emerged in response to the growing prevalence of diabetes and the urgent need for structured community and clinical interventions.

KDA serves as a central platform for uniting healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers to address diabetes through scientific conferences, public awareness campaigns, training programs, and collaborative research. The association works closely with local health authorities, international diabetes organizations, and academic institutions.

Since its establishment, KDA has organized several international conferences—bringing together experts from across the Levant, Gulf, and European countries. It has also led numerous public health initiatives aimed at early detection, patient education, and lifestyle modification.
